So… it’s clear to see that 2020 is turning out to be a pretty sucky year. But, despite everything that’s happened, I’ve read some great books! Here are my favorite reads of the first half of 2020.
These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
These Broken Stars was actually a reread for me! It’s the first book in the Starbound trilogy, one of my all-time favorite sci-fi series. I found myself enjoying the book the second time around just as much as I did the first time, simply because it’s been so long since I first read it! I forgot all of the twists and thrills that surprised me throughout the book, so it hardly felt like a reread at all! If you enjoyed Across the Universe, Aurora Rising, or The Lunar Chronicles, you’ll love These Broken Stars, and probably the other two Starbound novels as well!
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
I had SO much fun reading this book… I can’t even begin to describe how many times I smiled and/or laughed out loud while reading it. The Unhoneymooners is ridiculously hilarious, romantic, and heartwarming, and I encourage EVERYONE to read it, even if rom-com isn’t your go-to genre.
The Princess Will Save You by Sarah Henning
This book was all kinds of awesome. A gender-bent Princess Bride retelling where Buttercup saves Wesley? Yes, please! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this beautiful book, and I read it in less than 24 hours! Sarah Henning absolutely knocked it out of the park with this incredible novel. I’m already dying to read book two! Find my review for The Princess Will Save You here!
All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace
All the Stars and Teeth was a phenomenal start to a swashbuckling duology full of pirates, mermaids, and princesses! The characters in this story are beautifully developed, and I can’t wait to see how their stories progress in book two! If you enjoyed Daughter of the Pirate King, To Kill a Kingdom, or Caraval, this is the book for you! (Read my review here!)
Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron
Meet my new favorite Cinderella retelling… *drumroll* Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron! This book is dark and twisted, as it’s set in a world where women have been stripped of every right imaginable. It contains so many important themes that are eerily relevant in society today, which is partly why I found the book so spooky. You can read my review for it here!
Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen
I read a ton of fantasy, but I’ve never EVER read a fantasy novel like this one! In Stolen Songbird, Danielle L. Jensen unravels the questionable myths that surround trolls in such an interesting way! I won’t spoil anything, but let’s just say that everything you think you know about trolls is false, according to this book, at least! Read my glowing review for Stolen Songbird here!
